Sudden blindness or vision loss at work is a medical emergency most first aiders don’t know how to handle. Delay of even an hour can cost someone their sight permanently.

         Correct Response

  • Sudden painless vision loss – use F.A.S.T. stroke protocol immediately.
  • Arc eye from welding – cover both eyes with damp pads.
  • Flashing lights or dark “curtain” effect – urgent surgery needed.
  • Call ambulance for any sudden vision change.
  • Do not rub eyes under any circumstances.
         Warning Signs

  • Sudden flashes of light.
  • Floating dark spots appearing.
  • A “curtain” effect across vision.
  • Burning or gritty sensation hours after welding.
  • Vision loss in one or both eyes.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Never tell someone to rest and see if it improves.

Any sudden vision change is a medical emergency. Waiting may cost people their sight permanently.
