Manholes, storage tanks and silos are common in South African workplaces. They are also responsible for some of the most tragic multiple-fatality incidents – where rescuers become victims.

           Correct Response

  • Call emergency services immediately.
  • Ventilate the space from outside if possible.
  • Keep the casualty in sight and talking if possible.
  • Wait for the train Confined Space rescue team.
          Never do this

  • Never enter without breathing apparatus.
  • Don’t assume fresh air means it’s safe.
  • Don’t send multiple people in to help.
  • Never delay calling emergency services.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Only a trained confined space rescue team may enter.

More people have died attempting untrained confined space rescues than in the original incident.
