Needle stick injuries aren’t only a hospital risk. Cleaners, waste handlers, security staff and social workers across South Africa face this danger regularly. And the first two minutes are critical.

         Correct Response

  • Encourage wound to bleed freely under running water.
  • Wash with soap and water for two minutes minimum.
  • Cover with waterproof dressing.
  • Report to supervisor immediately.
  • Seek medical attention within two hours for HIV PEP assessment.
       Never do this

  • Don’t suck the wound.
  • Don’t apply pressure to stop bleeding.
  • Don’t wait to see if symptoms develop.
  • Never assume the needle is clean.

THE GOLDEN RULE

HIV PEP must start within 72 hours – ideally within two.

Delay reduces effectiveness dramatically. Treat every needle stick as a potentially infectious and act immediately.
