Asthma Attack at Work with no Inhaler: What now?
It happens all the time – an asthma attack strikes and the inhaler is forgotten at home or completely empty.
Immediate Response without Inhaler:
– Sit them upright. Never lie them down, it restricts breathing
– Stay calm. Panic and anxiety significantly worsens the attack
– Move them away from triggers (dust, smoke, chemicals, cold air)
– Encourage slow, controlled breathing. In through nose, out through mouth
– Call an ambulance immediately. Don’t wait to see if it improves
It becomes life threatening if:
– Lips or fingernails are turning blue
– They can’t speak in full sentences
– Breathing is rapidly worsening
– They’re becoming drowsy or confused
Workplace Tip:
Encourage asthmatic employees to always keep a spare inhaler at work. It could save their life.
And most of all – Train your Employees!
