Retail staff, security personnel and healthcare workers across South Africa face real risk of violent assault. First aiders must be prepared for trauma injuries beyond standard workplace accidents.

Stab Wounds
- Call ambulance immediately.
- Don’t remove embedded objects – they control the bleeding.
- Apply firm pressure around the wound, not on top of it.
- Keep the person still and calm.
- Treat for shock – keep warm and reassure.

First Aider’s Safety
- Never approach until the scene is confirmed safe.
- Wait for security or police to secure the area.
- Your safety comes first.
- Assume spinal injury if struck from behind.
- Monitor consciousness continuously.

THE GOLDEN RULE
An injured first aider helps nobody.
Your instinct is to help immediately – but entering an unsecured scene puts you at risk, too. Always confirm the scene is safe first. |
