Staff kitchens, canteens and catering areas are in almost every workplace. When a pan of oil catches fire, the instinct to grab water is the most dangerous reaction of all.

          Correct Response

  • Turn off the heat source if it is safe to do so.
  • Smother the flames with a fire blanket.
  • Use a wet chemical (class F) extinguisher if available.
  • Leave the pan to cool for at least 30 minutes.
  • Evacuate and call emergency services if the fire spreads.
         Never do This

  • Never throw water on burning oil.
  • Don’t carry or move the burning pan.
  • Don’t lift the lid to check too soon.
  • Don’t use a standard extinguisher at close range – it can splash burning oil.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Water on burning oil creates a Fireball.

Water sinks below the oil, turns to steam instantly and throws burning oil across the room. Smother it. Never soak it.
